THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress MLA M.A. Waheed staged a protest inside the Kazhakkuttom police station on Thursday morning demanding the release of two headload workers who were arrested on the charge of attempting to murder a resident of Puthukurichi. Mr. Waheed called off the protest when the Rural police refused to heed his demand. The arrested persons, Yehya and Shaji, were produced before the Attingal magistrate court and remanded to judicial custody. The police deployed officers in riot gear and `striker' units of the Special Armed Police outside the station to prevent trouble. The Superintendent of Police, Rural, P. Vijayan, said the accused were arrested in connection with the assault of Naushad while he was unloading imported furniture at his house in Puthukurichi on Tuesday night. According to the police, the headload workers owing allegiance to the INTUC demanded Rs.2,000 from Naushad for allowing him to unload the furniture his father had sent him from the Gulf. The argument led to fisticuffs and Naushad and several of his relatives were assaulted. The police arrested Yehya and Shaji when they were discharged from a private hospital on the charge of attempting culpable homicide not amounting to murder under section 308 of the Indian Penal Code.
