KOCHI: Cartoons should be seen as a catalyst for refining society, said the Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, here on Thursday. He was inaugurating the exhibition `Life and times of Yesudasan: a retrospective,' organised at the Ernakulam Town Hall, on the occasion of Yesudasan's Golden Jubilee as cartoonist. He said that cartoons had become a means of publicity these days. Since words were much more acerbic than the lines of a cartoonist, people preferred the thought-provoking criticism generated by cartoons than the tirade of words, he said. K.V. Thomas, MLA, presided over the function. The Mayor, C.M. Dinesh Mani, delivered the keynote address. Felicitation was offered by the Kerala Cartoon Academy chairman, Balachandran. N.N. Sathyavrathan, director, Institute of Journalism and Mass Communication, Kerala Press Academy, welcomed the audience. The three-day programme `Celebrating 50 Years of Responsible Cartooning' is being organised by the Corporation of Kochi, Kerala Press Academy, Ernakulam Press Club, Kerala Cartoon Academy and Toon Arts India. Earlier in the morning, a backwater cruise was arranged for cartoonists. The cruise was flagged off by K. Chandran Pillai, MP.
