KOCHI: Fish workers, under the aegis of the fisheries coordination committee, took out a march to the Cochin Port Trust demanding setting up of a fish auction centre and resting place at Vallarpadam. The trade union leaders of the fish workers' organisations will stage a dharna before the Ernakulam telephone exchange on June 2 as part of intensifying the agitation. Fishermen from Kochi, Alappuzha and Thrissur districts will lay siege to the Kochi port on June 16. The committee will also berth fishing vessels at the proposed site of the auction centre from June 20. K.V. Thomas, MLA, while inaugurating the dharna, said that the issue of auction centre would be raised at the next meeting of the Goshree Island Development Authority. Charles George, district convener of the committee, explained the situation that forced the fish workers to stage the dharna. M.M. Lawrence presided over the meeting. Trade union leaders, C.K. Gopalan, K.J. Antony, K.M. Kuttymoosa, Kumbalam Rajappan and A.B. Rajappan were among those who addressed the dharna.
