NEW DELHI: Noted poet and filmmaker Gulzar on Thursday said the brilliance of Indian classical singers and musicians would always stand out and it was time to honour these talented people who have popularised fine arts over the years. The chief guest at the Seventh Annual Legends of India Lifetime Achievement Awards ceremony in the Capital, Mr. Gulzar conferred awards on the "unsung legends" of Hindustani and Carnatic music and Indian classical dance. The recipients this year included accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer Yamini Krishnamurthy; musician Pt. Yashwant Balakrishna Joshi; noted instrumentalist of Hindustani classical music, Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan; Carnatic classical vocalist T.M. Thiagarajan; and violinist Lalgudi G. Jayaraman. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Krishnamurthy said: "I come from a family of writers and poets. But I knew from my childhood days that the only passion that filled my life was dance. In fact, I was the first person in my family to become a dancer. I do not agree with the view that Western dance has become more popular than traditional Indian dance. Some of my students have imbibed my style and spirit." Others who spoke on the occasion included noted filmmaker Govind Nihalani; the former Attorney General of India Soli Sorabjee, and chairman of the Selection Committee, Muthusamy Varadarajan.
