Gandhi Bhavan in the eye of storm

Teachers seek DU's intervention against misuse

NEW DELHI: If the decision to drop a complete paper on Mahatma Gandhi from the M.A. Political Science syllabus had come in for flak from a section of Delhi University's teaching community, it is now the working of the Gandhi Bhavan that seems to be causing a great deal of concern.

In a letter to the acting Vice-Chancellor, C.R. Babu, teachers have alleged misuse of the Bhavan and demanded the University's intervention in stopping activities that go against "Gandhian ideology''.

The Academics for Action and Development (AAD), a teachers' body, has also sought intervention of the Union Human Resource Development Minister, Arjun Singh, into a recent incident where 38 people have filed a complaint against the current management of the Bhavan for misusing the premises.

"I did receive a complaint and have asked the Director of Gandhi Bhavan to enquire into the matter, ascertain the facts and report the findings in the shortest possible time. If found true, we will take the necessary steps to put an end to any such activity,'' said Prof. Babu.

According to teachers, the Bhavan was used for a birthday party on the night of May 11, with the compound being used as a dance floor.

A number of people who came the next morning for their usual round of yoga practice found the compound littered with garbage, leftover food and alcohol bottles.

In the letter written to Prof. Babu, the 38 complainants stated that "the participants of yoga classes were dismayed on May 12 morning to see the condition of the hall. The surroundings were littered with garbage, leftover food and even alcohol bottles''.

They pointed out that the rules and regulations displayed on the notice board categorically specify that the place cannot be used for eating, sleeping or dining purposes.
