MCD seals two godowns

Staff Reporter

Action against more transporters likely

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Thursday sealed at least two godowns of transporters who were found storing hazardous chemicals at Kamla Market in Central Delhi. Similarly, sealing of five other transport companies in Naya Bazar area where storage of chemical was found has also been ordered.

During its inspection drive, an MCD team found that Nagpal Express Transport Company Pvt. Ltd. owning shop No.150 and Delhi Ballabhgarh Road Lines operating from shop No.59 in the market were illegally storing hazardous chemicals. They immediately sealed the shops and confiscated bills and other documents of the seized products.

Earlier, MCD had issued 343 show-cause notices to transporters and traders operating from different markets including Katra Bazar, Fatehpuri, S.P. Mukherjee Marg, Naya Bazaar, Lahori Gate, Kamla Market, New Lajpat Rai Market, Esplanade Road, Daryaganj, Bhag Diwar, H.C. Sain Road and Qutab Road, an official press release said.

Of these, 139 transporters affiliated to the Delhi Goods Transport Association and Delhi Transporters Association had moved the Delhi High Court challenging the show-cause notices. The High Court had quashed the notices after the transporters had given a written undertaking stating that they were running booking offices from their shops and were not using it for storing any kind of chemicals or hazardous chemicals. The High Court had directed the MCD to take action in accordance with provisions of the DMC Act and to issue fresh notices, the release said.

Subsequently, the MCD in compliance of the High Court orders had constituted a committee consisting of administrative officer, zonal superintendent, general assistant and area licensing inspector along with representatives of transport associations to survey the premises of petitioners. On inspection, it was found that at least two transporters were storing chemicals, hence action was taken against them, it added.

The Corporation also informed that of the 343 show-cause notices issued, the re-inspection of premises of 139 transporters was being conducted. Their cases will be decided on merit after physical verification of all transporters' premises.
