`Extortionist' arrested

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW: The Special Cell of the Delhi police has arrested two alleged hard-core criminals who according to it were running an extortion racket and claims to have recovered a car, two firearms and some live cartridges from them. The duo was reportedly involved in several cases of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping and criminal intimidation across the Capital.

About 10 days ago, the Special Cell got a tip-off about an extortion racket being run by the notorious Jaggi gang of West Delhi. On Wednesday, information was received that Jagdish alias Jaggi and two associates would be coming to Paschim Vihar in a Maruti Esteem car to kill one of the cable operators residing there. Subsequently, a team was constituted which intercepted their car. After a brief exchange of fire, the two were nabbed.

Fake tobacco seized

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW: The Economics Offences Wing of the Delhi police Crime Branch has busted an illegal factory manufacturing fake chewing tobacco products of well-known brands. Besides arresting the factory manager, the police have recovered machines and goods worth over Rs.65 lakhs.

Acting on a complaint of Dharampal Satyapal Sons Pvt. Ltd. that some unscrupulous elements were manufacturing fake products of their brands -- "Tulsi Zarda", "Baba Zarda" and "Ratna Zarda" -- at Bhola Nath Nagar in Farsh Bazar area of East Delhi, a police team raided the premises and recovered large quantities of fake products.

Nabbed for selling

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW: Three persons have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly selling pirated books of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Nearly 26,000 books worth over Rs.10 lakhs are claimed to have been recovered from them.

Identified as Shahid Mirza, Mohammad Shafiq and Pankaj Rastogi, the three used to operate from different locations. Acting on a tip off, a police team accompanied by the NCERT's Head of Publications, P Rajkumar, reached the Chandni Mahal residence of Mirza and sent a decoy customer to trap him.

Following a raid by the police team, 10,945 NCERT books were recovered from his house, with a majority of them being of Hindi, Maths and English Literature.

Held for contempt

of court

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW: The East Delhi police on Thursday arrested one Shabeer Ahmed, wanted in a contempt of court case. According to the police, despite giving an undertaking in the court in a property dispute case, he failed to vacate a rented house. A case was filed against him and he was awarded one-month simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs.2,000. However, Shabeer fled from the city and was arrested from the neighbouring Gautam Budh Nagar district.

Arrested for impersonation

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW: One person has been arrested by the Delhi police for alleged impersonation in a medical entrance examination on behalf of his acquaintance. The accused, Harmender Kumar alias Pankaj, was arrested when he was writing the exam for his friend, Kuldeep Kumar, in the Delhi University Dental Entrance Test at the Laxmi Bai College centre.
