CHENNAI: One hundred and forty four copper coins, belonging to the 11th century A.D., were found recently at the Nayavaradheshwarar temple, Tiruvarur. About 10 days ago, construction workers engaged in excavation for renovation of the temple, stumbled upon the coins in an earthen pot. K. Saravanan, curator of the Tiruvarur Government Museum, said that one of the coins had the image of King Rajaraja Chola in a sitting posture on one side and the inscription "Rajaraja," on the other, with the image of the King in a standing posture. The coins were handed over to the district administration on May 10. Mr. Saravanan said that the coins would be displayed at the Tiruvarur Government Museum.
