Boy fatally knocked down

Tuticorin: Murugesan (45) was arrested on a charge of fatally knocking down a child at Thattarmadam on Thursday.

The police said Jesbar (5) was playing on street when Murugesan's bike knocked him down. He died at the Tiruneveli Medical College.

Man held with ganja

Tuticorin: The police seized ganja from Muniasamy at Chottayanthoppu falling under the Thalamuthu Nagar police station limits and arrested him.

Sources said Muniasamy was found moving suspiciously. On questioning, it was found that he was having 50 grams of ganja.

The accused was remanded in custody.

Pirated CDs seized, one arrested

Tuticorin: Pirated and pornographic video compact discs were seized from a video parlour at Kulasekarapattinam during a raid on Thursday. Premraj (27) was arrested.

The police said on information, a team raided the shop and found CDs of latest Tamil films in the shop. The accused was remanded in custody.

Construction materials stolen: 3 nabbed

Tuticorin: Three persons were arrested on charges of stealing construction materials at Kovilpatti on Thursday.

The police said Kanagaraj (20), Justin Ponraj (29), and Inbaraj (22), stole iron rods kept inside K.R. College premises.

Relay fast concludes

Tuticorin: A three -day relay fast observed by fishermen of Taruvaikulam to press their multi-point demands came to an end here on Friday.

The fisher folks urged the authorities to disburse tsunami relief to them at the earliest and supply diesel at subsidised prices to the fisher folks.

The police said 250 fishermen took part. — Staff Reporter

3 children drown

Dharmapuri: Three girls drowned in a lake at Ichampadi, 30 kms from here on Wednesday. According to the police, Divya (12), Nithya (10) and Nivetha (10) of Uthangkarai were bathing in the lake when they reportedly got caught in the current. The relatives of Divya and Nithya, retrieved the bodies and cremated them the same night without informing the police. - Staff Reporter

ERODE: The Vellode police on Friday arrested a member of Friends of Police unit for helping a Sub-Inspector in a rape case. Some days ago, a 31-year-old woman of Mugasi Anumanpalli lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of Police, P. Balasubramanian. She stated that she was summoned to the Vellode station on the night of May 13 with her husband. She was asked to return home and a person, later found as Anandan, a member of Friends of Police Unit, took her in a motorcycle with the Sub- Inspector, Devarajan, accompanying them. When they came near a temple, Devarajan raped her, she alleged. The police arrested Anandan. Devarajan is still at large. - Staff Reporter

New hospital

Erode: A new multi-specialty hospital will start functioning here from May 22. Speaking to mediapersons on Friday, the president of the Trust Hospital, V. Jeevanandhem, said that 25 doctors of Erode and 25 persons jointly formed a Trust in Erode. The trust was running the Trust Hospital. He said that nominal charges would be collected from patients. Transparency would be maintained in billing. The hospital would function from the Old Natesar Mill compound, Perundurai road, Erode.

The Trust would start a Nursing School and Cancer Centre next year, he said.

Pattas distributed

Tiruvarur: The Collector, P.Ekambaram, distributed house site pattas to 26 narikurava families at Needamangalam in Tiruvarur district on Thursday.

He said that 10 group houses would be constructed for narikuravas under the Prime Minister Gramin Yojana at a cost of Rs. 36,500 each for 10 narikurava families. He also distributed 150 house site pattas to Adi Dravidars in Parappanallur. — Staff Reporter

Oath taken

Thanjavur: Government employees and officers took an oath against terrorism at the Collectorate here today in view of death anniversary of former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, which falls on May 21. V. Rajaraman, District Revenue Officer, administered the pledge against terrorism. Employees took the oath to strive for national integration and shun violence. — Staff Reporter

Power shutdown

Thanjavur: There will be no power supply on Saturday in the following areas due to maintenance work to be taken up at the sub-station at Ayyampettai, says T.Nadarajan, Executive Engineer, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, Kumbakonam, in a press release: Ayyampettai, Vazhuthur, Naducauvery, Eachankudi, Melathirupanthuruthi, Ganapathy Agraharam, Vayalur, Ramapuram, Kandiyur and Vilankudi. — Staff Reporter

Tiruchi : The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 52.51 feet today. The inflow was 1060 cusecs and the discharge 900 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Maran's plea to Civil Aviation Minister

CHENNAI: The Union Minister of Communications and InformationTechnology, Dayanidhi Maran, has again urged the Civial Aviation Minister, Praful Patel, to expedite modernisation of the Chennai airport and other airports in the State.

Mr. Maran, in a letter to Mr. Patel, suggested that three aerobridges with a capacity to handle A-380s be provided at the international terminal and six at the domestic terminal.

The aerobridges at the international terminal should have separate entry for first class passengers. He said adequate number of aerobridges would help in the free flow of passengers. — Special Correspondent

MoU signed

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University has signed a memorandum of understanding with the AIDS Prevention and Control (APAC) to train 200 doctors in HIV/AIDS management.

The MoU was signed by the Vice-Chancellor, C.V. Bhirmanandham, and the Project Director of APAC/VHS, P. Krishnamurthy. Under the agreement, the APAC/VHS will provide Rs. 37 lakhs to the Department of Experimental Medicine and AIDS Research Centre of the university to undertake the programme. The department will prepare the training modules suitable for doctors from Tamil Nadu.

M. Padmanabhan, Registrar, commended the international funding agencies for advocating the importance of training healthcare professionals to enhance the quality of care and supportive services made available to HIV infected persons.

The 10-day programme envisages training 200 doctors in 10 batches. — Staff Reporter

5 child workers rescued

TUTICORIN: Officials of the departments of labour and municipal administration and the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) rescued five child labourers from here in raids conducted on Friday.

Official sources said Nazarudin, Isakimuthu, Selvaraj, Akbar and Mohamed Paris were rescued from shops and establishments at Bryant Nagar, old bus stand area and Victoria Extension road.

The NCLP would ensure that the child workers would attend regular schools from the academic year starting next month, the sources said.

Altogether, 10 child labourers were rescued in the district this week. — Staff Reporter

Airmen recruitment

CHENNAI: Recruitment of airmen in technical trades (Group X) of the Indian Air Force will be made in six centres including the one at the Airmen Selection Centre in Bangalore, says a Defence release.

The recruitment rally would be conducted between June 8 and 15 in three phases for mechanic machine tool, turner maintenance, millwright mechanic, machinist fitter, instrument mechanic, electrician, mechanic-cum-operator, electronic communication system and information technology and electronic system maintenance.

Unmarried males born between January 1, 1985 and September 30, 1988, who have passed Standard X with English and the ITI course with a minimum of 55 per cent marks are eligible. Candidates should possess prescribed physical standards. The selection process includes verification of documents, written examination, physical fitness test, interview and medical examination. Original certificates, along with three attested copies, seven photographs and two self-addressed envelopes should be submitted during the rally.
