GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat BJP MLA Bhavin Sheth escaped an attempt on his life on Friday when he was fired at at the Saputara hill resort. Mr. Sheth, who is on vacation at the resort, said he had come out of the circuit house for a walk around 7 a.m when two persons on a motorcycle came towards him. He saw the pillion rider aiming a pistol at him and quickly slipped behind a pillar. The bullet missed him. The attackers escaped. They could be hired killers, he said adding that he did not see any political conspiracy behind the bid on his life.
Statement recorded
Police have recorded Mr. Sheth's statement and the MLA is expected to return to Ahmedabad later in the day. Mr. Sheth's armed commandos were not with him when the incident occurred. State Home Secretary Shivanand Jha said all escape routes had been sealed and searches were being conducted. Forensic experts, sketchers and a police dog squad had been dispatched to Saputara to trace the assailants. No clue has been found so far. Mr. Sheth was elected from Ellisbridge constituency in Ahmedabad, earlier represented by Haren Pandya, who was shot dead in March last. Mr. Pandya's father, Vithhalbhai Pandya, had alleged Chief Minister Narendra Modi's hand in his son's assassination. Mr. Sheth is believed to be lately hobnobbing with the BJP dissident MLAs who are demanding Mr Modi's ouster.
