Sania loses

NEW DELHI: Sania Mirza, in partnership with Katarina Kachlikova of Slovakia, went down fighting 6-7(2), 6-1, 6-7(5) in the doubles quarterfinals to Marta Domachowska of Poland and Marlene Weingartner of Germany in the $170,000 WTA Tour event in Strasbourg, France, on Thursday.

Sania collected 30 WTA points and the two shared a prize purse of $1,225. The 18-year-old Hyderabad girl who had lost in the second round of the singles qualifying event will compete in the French Open at Rolland Garros as a direct entrant in the main draw next week.

Ravishankar bows out

Pathanjali Ravishankar lost 2-6, 4-6 to Simon Stadler of Germany in the quarterfinals after upsetting the seventh-seeded Michael Yani of the U.S. 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the previous round of the $10,000 ITF Futures tennis tournament in Phuket, Thailand.

Two other Indians, second-seeded Vinod Sridhar and fifth-seeded Vishaal Uppal lost in the second round. Vinod lost to Suwandi Suwandi of Indonesia 6-7(0), 3-6 and Vishaal lost to Alun Jones of Australia 2-6, 3-6.

In doubles, Vinod Sridhar and Kamala Kannan reached the semifinals before losing 6-4, 1-6, 0-6 to second-seeded Domenic Marafiote of Australia and Michael Yani of the US.

Mixed results for India

The third-seeded Indian boys were beaten 3-0 by eighth-seeded China in a positional match of the Asia-Oceania World junior under-14 tennis tournament here on Friday.

The Indian boys will play fourth-seeded Thailand for the seventh place. The Indian girls beat Sri Lanka and set up a clash with Hong Kong for the ninth place.

The results:

Boys: China bt India 3-0 (Zheng-Yu Liu bt Yuki Bhambri 7-6(4), 6-1; Bei Liu bt Christopher Marcus 7-6(5), 6-0; Zheng-Yu Liu/Bei Liu bt Mansingh Athare/Christopher Marcus 6-1, 4-6, 6-0).

Girls: India bt Sri Lanka 3-0 (Janaki Rao bt Nilupul Goonesekera 6-3, 6-2; Sweta Solanki bt Jithmi Jayawickrama 6-1, 7-6 (5); Prerna Mythri and Sweta Solanki bt Nilupul Goonesekera/Jithmi Jayawickrama 6-1, 6-1).
