HYDERABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has alleged that the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) board has purchased eight luxury cars at a cost of Rs. 50 lakhs to ferry its directors when they attended board meetings. The BJP leader in Assembly, G. Kishan Reddy, told reporters on Friday that the TTD was already in possession of hundreds of cars. "Will they not serve the purpose when the directors stay on the hill?" he questioned. Mr. Reddy referred to the issue while making a point that the funds of the TTD were being misused. The board had diverted Rs. 10 crores to the Tirupati Urban Development Authority for development of drainage system and another Rs. 33 crores for setting up of veterinary university. There were also large-scale irregularities in the auction of foodgrains donated by devotees, hike in staff salaries and sale of TTD lands. The rent for accommodation was hiked and so were laddu and seva rates. Why should there be any increase when the TTD had surplus income? he asked
