THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Health Minister, K.K. Ramachandran, has urged the Kerala Government Medical Officers Association to call off their agitation scheduled for May 23. The Minister said in an official release here on Friday that the agitation would cause much hardship to patients, and hence, the Government would have to view any plans by doctors to disrupt services seriously. Mr. Ramachandran noted that the Government was willing to discuss any demands by the doctors. "The Association should have represented the matter to me as the Minister in charge of the department before announcing direct action." He recalled that the question of granting quota to government doctors who had put in years of rural service for postgraduate courses in medicine had been taken up with the Central Government. Consultations regarding private practice of government doctors were in its last stage. As to the complaint that there were not enough doctors in primary health centres, the Government could do little, as a large percentage of doctors selected through the Public Service Commission had not joined the service. Other service matters could be discussed.
