NAGAPATTINAM: Nearly 150 school children (VI to X Standard) belonging to fishermen community of the tsunami-hit coastal villages of Vanavanmahadevi and Vizhundamavadi in Nagapattinam district have displayed their art works like painting on cloth and glass, greeting cards, bamboo baskets and paper bags at the Collectorate here on Friday. The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, appreciated the talents of the children and the efforts of the Development Promotion Group (DPG), a Chennai-based NGO, that had provided training to the children in Vanavanmahadevi coastal hamlet in making art works and handicraft items. R. Bhakther Solomon, CEO of Development Promotion Group, said that six craft teachers imparted training in painting, designing, arts and craft work for 21 days to the children. He pointed out that the DPG had so far spent nearly Rs.50 lakhs towards relief and rehabilitation of tsunami-affected people in Vanavanmahadevi. The organisation had provided 20 new fibreglass boats, nets and engines to the fishermen of Vanavanmahadevi, he added.
