The Collector hopes water may be discharged from the Papanasam dam for `kar' season The Collector expressed the hope that water might be discharged from the Papanasam dam for the `kar' season farming, as storage position in major reservoirs was "comfortable."

TIRUNELVELI: The district administration has sent proposals to the Government to desilit the Karuppanadhi dam on an outlay of Rs.16 crores, the Collector, Atul Anand, has said.

Speaking at ae farmers' grievance day meeting held at the Collectorate on Friday, Natarajan, a farmer of Kadayanallur, said desilting of Karuppanadhi dam should be taken up immediately for the benefit of farmers in the Kadayanallur region.

Moreover, the water of some wild streams in the Western Ghats in that region could be diverted to the dam to augment the source, he suggested.

Mr. Atul Anand said the district administration had sent the proposal to the Government for the desilting of the dam and the work would be taken up once the Government gave its nod.

He also said that of the 100 irrigation tanks in the Kadayanallur region, 72 had already been desilted and the rest would be desilted with the assistance of the World Bank.

When farmers complained of invasion of wild animals into the farmlands adjacent to the reserve forests of the Western Ghats, he said the farmers would be compensated for the damage caused by the wild animals provided they could furnish the certificate on the quantum of damage, issued by a competent revenue official.

The Collector expressed the hope that water might be discharged from the Papanasam dam for the `kar' season farming activities, as storage position in major reservoirs of the district was "comfortable".

Officials from the Department of Agriculture said black gram cultivated on 72 acres of land had suffered damage, owing to rain in April.

The District Forest Officer, H. Venu Prasad, the District Revenue Officer, G. Loganathan, the Joint Director, Department of Agriculture, Dhanushkodi, the Executive Engineer, PWD, T. Shanmugasundaram, and others participated.
