Breeding ground: Plastic materials dumped into Perumpallam Odai, block the causeway near Jeevanandam Road. Photo: M. Govarthan
ERODE: The Perumpallam Odai, running across the heart of Erode, has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The Odai originates at Kadirampatty village, and flows through the town to reach the Kalingarayan Canal, five kilometres from the town. Sewage from a few municipal wards mixes with the Odai. Further, the use of plastic in the town increases at alarming proportions. Despite instructions from municipal officials, the public continue to throw plastic materials into the Odai.
Dumping plastic
Eventually, lots of plastic materials, including plastic bags, are dumped into the Odai. This has caused stagnation near the causeway bridge on Jeevanandham Road, and mosquito menace has reached an intolerable level now. The residents have urged the municipal administration to spray mosquito repellents. A few months back the Odai was desilted, but due to accumulation of garbage, the flow of water is now affected. Meanwhile, the municipal authorities said that there was a proposal to raise the causeway near Jeevanandham Road into a high-level bridge, when they cleaned the Odai.
