No hooch dens in twin cities, say police

DHARWAD: The Police Commissioner, K.V. Gagandeep, on Friday claimed that there are no hooch manufacturing units in the twin cities.

He told presspersons that police conducted raids in the Hubli Settlement Area on suspicion that hooch manufacturing units were operating there. But the suspicion proved wrong, he said.

Illicit manufacturing of liquor and trade in the Kamaripet area has stopped, he claimed. The kingpins of the trade, Kashi Khode and Sanjiv Katwe, have been arrested under the provisions of the Goonda (Prevention) Act and sent to jail. Those who were into manufacture of illicit liquor have left the city, Mr. Gagandeep claimed. Stringent measures have been taken to check the entry of spirit used for manufacture of illicit liquor into the city, he said.

Mr. Gagandeep said permission will not be given for live bands and snooker parlours in the twin cities.

Illicit liquor seized

In a joint operation on Friday, officials of the excise and police officials arrested two persons and seized illicit liquor worth Rs. 1 lakh. In another incident, two persons were arrested when they were trying to transport illicit liquor in an autorickshaw. the arrested include Gangadhar Kandagal and Virappa Bannikoppa.
