Conditions laid down for golf course in Hubli

Staff Correspondent

  • Permission to be given after September 15
  • Survey Department to earmark boundaries of lake
  • Corporation will put up concrete pillars to mark the boundaries of the lake

HUBLI: The controversy surrounding the construction of a golf course adjacent to the Unakal Lake in Hubli seems to be heading towards a solution if the meeting held here on Friday is any indication.

The Commissioner of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, P. Manivannan, acting on the directions of the Karnataka High Court, put forward some conditions for granting permission to continue the work on the project.

He said there would be no opposition to the construction of the golf course if the conditions are met. He said permission would be given only after September 15, when the Survey Department will take steps to earmark the boundaries.

Until then, the R.N. Shetty group, which is implementing the project, should maintain status quo, he said.

Mr. Manivannan said once the Survey Department finalises the boundaries, the Corporation will put up concrete pillars to mark the boundaries of the lake. He said the fixing of the boundaries and concrete pillars will be over by August 31.

He said the fence should be such that it will not obstruct the flow of rainwater into the lake; the two channels that carry rainwater to the lake should not be disturbed; no chemical fertilizer or pesticide should be used; the cart track up to Bhairidevarakoppa should be retained and the tiny bridge that has been constructed should be demolished and a bigger bridge constructed. Only when these conditions are met, permission would be given for the construction of the golf course, he said.

Although representatives of the R.N.S. Group took exception to one of the conditions, the Commissioner said that he was only acting according to the direction of the High Court and if they had any complaint they were free to approach the court.

Gundur, Corporator; Gugri, President, Unkal Kere Hitarakshana Samiti; officials of the Survey Department, Revenue Department, Hubli-Dharwad Development Authority and others were present at the meeting.
