A moving tale of kindness

NEW DELHI: The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, has donated Rs.1lakh from his personal funds to the family of Shivnath Singh of Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh who had died in a road accident in the Capital two years ago and donated his organs for transplant.

As many as six persons became recipients of the donor's eyes, heart, liver and kidney in due course. In a bid to promote donation of organs for transplant to needy patients by citing the example of Shivnath Singh, the Vice-President's Secretariat made efforts to locate the whereabouts of his family through the District Magistrate and MP of Ghazipur and the family, comprising his widow, two sons and a 19-year-old daughter, was traced in a village.

On learning about the poor economic condition of the family, Mr. Shekhawat sent the cheque through the former U.P. Chief Minister Jagdambika Pal and it was delivered on Friday to Phulehra Devi, the widow of Shivnath Singh.

The Vice-President has assured the family of a job for one of the sons who has just turned 18 and pension for Phulehra Devi. He has also promised to attend the wedding of the daughter.
