Rotary Club meeting

Thanjavur: The district assembly for 2005-2006 of the Rotary district 2980 will be held here tomorrow.

AIR special programme

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi All India Radio (AIR) station will broadcast a special one-hour phone-in programme on `Vetrikku vazhi' from 11.00 a.m. on Sunday (May 22) on `Nutrition and dietetics'.

A resource-person, R. Anitha will clarify the doubts of listeners in the subject. An official release said in the `Ilaya Bharatham' at 8 p.m. the same day, V.Shiva Shankar would answer questions of listeners in environmental chemistry. Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 52.49 feet today.

Case against panchayat president

ERODE: The Uthiyur police registered case against a panchayat president for quarrying sand. According to the Public Works Department officials, on Friday the Punganthurai panchayat president and 30 others quarried sand along River Amaravathy and loaded it on a lorry. Though PWD officials prevented them, they left the place with sand in lorries. - Staff Reporter

Murdered

Krishnagiri: A 28-year-old woman was arrested on charges of murdering her husband, in Hosur, 45 kms from here on Saturday. According to the police, Kandasamy (40) and his wife Thangamani used to quarrel often. In one such altercation, Thangamani, attacked Kandasamy with a wooden log. He died on the spot. - Staff Reporter

Five injured

Krishnagiri: Five persons were seriously injured when a lorry hit a Tata Sumo in which they were travelling near here on Saturday. According to the police, 15 persons from Bangalore were travelling on the vehicle to attend a relative's wedding in Gudiyatham when the incident took place. . The seriously injured were referred to a Bangalore hospital. - Staff Reporter

44 fibre boats distributed

NAGERCOIL: Forty four fibre boats and fishing equipment worth Rs. 25 lakhs were distributed to 44 tsunami-affected fishermen by Kanyakumari Collector Sunil Paliwal on behalf of the Chennai Container Terminal and the Srinivasa Service Trust of the TVS group, at a function at Kottilpadu on Friday.

The Collector said over 200 lives were lost at Kottilpadu during the tsunami and the Government distributed over Rs. 69 lakhs towards relief and for buying and repairing boats and fishing equipment. — Staff Reporter

Raid on refugee camp, five arrested

NAGERCOIL: The police arrested five agents in Kanyakumari district on Friday for trying to bargain with Sri Lankan refugees at Kozivilai camp to ship them to Sri Lanka.

Police sources said the racket came to light when the village administrative officer of Kulappuram near Kaliakkavilai, Dharma Mani, and police raided the refugee camp.

The police have arrested Lekshmanan, Johnson, Rajendran, Mahendaran and Kirubakaran. — Staff Reporter

Velu to visit Paris, Switzerland

CHENNAI: The Union Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, will go on a five-day tour of Paris and Switzerland from May 22.

The Minister on an invitation from International Union of Railways (UIS Paris) will inaugurate the first course of International Railway Strategic Management Institute to be held at Paris on May 23.

Mr. Velu will hold discussions with the Ministry of Transport, France, on the country's high-speed rail network.

During his visit to Switzerland, he will visit the Swiss Alpine Tunnel Project (world's largest construction project) and travel on Mountain Train System, apart from meeting Swiss Ministry of Transport officials, according to a Southern Railway release. — Special Correspondent

Railway AGM hurt

in accident

CHENNAI: The Southern Railway Additional General Manager, R. Gopinathan Nair, and his wife had a miraculous escape, when the car in which they were travelling met with an accident near Sullurpeta, 80 km from here on Saturday morning.

Mr. Nair was on his way to Sullurpeta for an inspection when the vehicle dashed against the parapet wall of a culvert and rolled down. Mr. Nair suffered a fracture in his left wrist, while his wife had a minor scalp injury. Both of them were taken to the Railway Hospital at Perambur here, where Mr. Nair was operated on. They are now recovering. The driver was treated in a local hospital. — Special Correspondent

Higher secondary supplementary exam

CHENNAI: Application forms for students writing the higher secondary special supplementary exams will be available at the office of the Director of Government Examinations from May 25.

The forms will also be available at the district education offices, zonal offices of the Government examination department and Joint Director (Education), Pondicherry. Only students who have written the Plus-Two exams in March/April 2005 and have not cleared a minimum of three papers or have been absent for a minimum of three subjects can apply for this, according to a release.

The last date for submission of applications (along with appropriate fee for each subject, photocopy of the mark sheet and letter from the principal of the school the applicant studied in) is May 31. Exams begin on June 24. — Special Correspondent

Governor lauds Tuticorin Collector

Tuticorin: The Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, has commended the Tuticorin Collector for having met the collection targets for Flag Day celebrations in 2003.

A certificate sent by Mr. Barnala to the Collector, which was received here on Friday, conveyed the appreciation of the Governor, who is also the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Flag Day Organisation Committee, for the efforts made by the district administration.

The Governor also mentioned that the Armed Forces Day was an occasion to remember the valuable services rendered by the Armed Forces in protecting the territorial integrity.

One killed, five injured

TIRUNELVELI: One person was killed and five others were injured when a speeding van lost its control near Valliyoor on Saturday.

The police said the van going from Nakkanaeri near Radhapuram to Kayathar lost its control near the railway crossing at Valliyoor and fatally knocked down Arumugam (80) of Kumarankudiyiruppu.

Though the van overturned, only five of the occupants sustained injuries.

Woman arrested,

ganja seized

Tuticorin: A woman was arrested on Friday on a charge of possessing ganja.

The police said Fatima (38) was taken into custody while she was moving around Loordammalpuram area suspiciously. The police seized 500 grams of ganja from her.

She was remanded in custody.

Youth waylaid

Tuticorin: The police are on the lookout for Muthumalai, who waylaid Manickam (18) and extorted money from him here on Friday.

According to the police, the accused stopped Manickam at Thalamuthu Nagar and took away Rs.5,000 from him after threatening him.

Manickam sustained injuries in the attack and was later admitted to a hospital.

Two arrested on

assault charge

Tuticorin: Chinnaperumal (35) and Thadikaran (52) was arrested for allegedly assaulting Arumugam (25) at Perinbapuram on Friday.

The police said the accused had an altercation with the complainant over sharing of water for irrigation. Arumugam was attacked with a sickle and an iron rod.

The police are now on the lookout for Dharmar, an accomplice of the accused. — Staff Reporter
