Pappathi wins a close race

Coimbatore: A. Pappathi of St. Joseph's Prime Sports Academy displayed nerves of steel on her way to a fine victory in the women's 5000m on the opening day of the 78th Tamil Nadu State athletics championship here on Saturday.

Sebastiammal (12:20.06.6s) from the same academy and S. Ramya (12:20.13.4s) from Pudukottai gave Pappathi (12:20:03.2s) a run for her money at the final stretch, but the Chennai girl kept her cool to clinch the gold.

Favourite K.N. Priya, as expected, pocketed the 100m hurdles gold clocking 14.1s. D. Karupuramala of SDAT Sports Hostel (Erode) and Christy Jaya of Tamil Nadu Police took silver and bronze respectively.

R. Padmanaban of Nilgiris district clocked 34:00.0s to win the men's 10,000m, while R. Miller Bertrand Russel of St. Joseph's Prime Sports Academy cleared 4.50m for the pole vault gold.
