INTO ELITE CLUB: Maha Singh, with a leap of 7.91m, joined the elite group of six Indian long jumpers who have done 7.90m or better.

PATIALA: Maha Singh leaped to a distance of 7.91 metres to join an elite bunch of Indian long jumpers as the second National circuit meet completed its 17-event card in near darkness at NIS complex here on Saturday.

Maha Singh produced two jumps that touched or crossed 7.90 metres, but on a windy day, there was no wind-reading available for either of his two best jumps, 7.91 metres on his fourth attempt and 7.90 metres on his sixth and last.

The 24-year-old SAF Games champion from Punjab joined six others who have done 7.90 or better, Amritpal Singh (National record, 8.08m), T.C. Yohannan (8.07m), Sanjay Kumar Rai (8.03m), Suresh Babu (7.97m), P.V. Wilson (7.90m) and Wayne Peppin (7.90). Amritpal, incidentally, finished third on Saturday.

More than the missing wind-readings, what was of significance in the case of Maha Singh was his `status' after the reported dope positive he returned at the Indo-Pak Punjab Games here last January.

"We have no information about it. No report was forwarded to us. Now it will be time-barred, we can't take any action even if a positive report is forwared to us," said the Athletics Federation Secretary, Lalit Bhanot.

Maha Singh apart, there were a few others who strained on a hot day.

Ranvijay's show

Ranvijay Singh scored his third victory on the trot in the domestic meets in shot put, winning with a best of 19.23.

Sunita Rani, coming back into top-level competition on the track after a

Gap — if one were to exclude the Punjab Games — strove spiritedly in attempting a national record in the 10,000 metres.

But given the conditions, though a late start and a cloud cover did provide some relief from the searing heat, she was going to find the National record of 34:30.20 very difficult to beat.

That is how it turned out though she had a leeway of two laps from the nearest challenger at the finish that came in 34:57.42. The longer distance happened to be just a build-up for Sunita's metric mile preparations for the season.

Neelam J. Singh touched a season best of 60.65m and second-placed Krishna Poonia a personal best 58.33m in women's discus, with national record holder Seema Antil once again finishing a poor third with 53.85m.

The men sprinters were done in by a whistle-blowing recall starter. After a false start, when the runners took off, there was an `accidental' whistle but the race was allowed to finish instead of the runners being recalled. H. Jayachandran won, but many complained of the whistle that stalled them a little.
