HYDERABAD: D. Majumdar and S. Basak emerged the champions in the pairs event of the inaugural junior National bridge championship at the KVBR Indoor Stadium on Friday. Majumdar, runner-up in the 2002 National championship in Aurangabad, and Basak led after the first session of Mitchell Movement with a score of 86 IMPs in the East-West direction followed by Sashi Singh and Amit Srivastava and A.V.N. Ravikanth and P. John, respectively. In the North-South direction, Sapan Desai and Vijayraghavan of Tamil Nadu led in the first session with 43 IMPs followed by Aniket Sanghvi and Sandeep Dutta of Kolkata and A. Srujan and M.B.C. Manoj Kumar of AP, respectively. However, Kolkata's Majumdar and Basak continued their impressive show in the second session, technically called the Howell Movement, for a cumulative score of 118 IMPs and emerged winners. Vijayaraghavan and Sapan Desai were second with 95 IMPs and Aniket Sanghvi and Sandeep Dutta finished third with 58 IMPs. The Indian team for the Bridge Federation of Asia and Middle-East championship to be held in Karachi in the second week of June will be picked based on the performances in this championship. On Saturday, in the team of four duplicate event, the Azad Hind team comprising B. Majumdar, Sandeep Dutta, Kastub Bindre, Aniket Sanghvi, Kaustub Nandi and S. Basak was leading with 118 VPs at the end of the first set of round-robin league. Top Flight team comprising S. Vijayaraghavan, Sapan Desai, B. Baroi, A. Gayen, S. Sowmik and S. Tiwari was second with 85 VPs. Chennai IIT `B" with N.R. Prasad, Bala Vamshi, Angad Singh and T. Gaurav was third with 59 VPs.
