Early constitution of human rights' panel sought

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: An appeal for early constitution of the State Human Rights' Commission in Karnataka bearing the signatures of litterateurs, intellectuals, and social activists has been sent to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh.

The People's Legal Forum, Mysore, had launched a campaign for the constitution of the commission last month and went about collecting signatures of well-known personalities in the State to pressure the Government.

"After collecting signatures from 53 noted personalities in a month's time, we faxed it to the Chief Minister on Friday," the forum convenor, P.P. Baburaj, said.

A copy of the appeal has also been sent to the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah; the Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, H.K. Patil; and the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, A.S. Anand. The forum has sought to bring to the notice of Mr. Dharam Singh the failure of the Government to constitute a chapter of the commission in the State.
