MYSORE: The composition of the Chennai-Mysore-Chennai Shatabdi Express has been changed temporarily and AC sleeper coaches have been introduced instead of AC chair cars following Wednesday's accident near Channapatana in Bangalore division. Sources in the Mysore Divisional Railway told The Hindu that the Shatabdi rake comprising seven coaches will now have A/C three tier coach in place of the chair car and AC two-tier coaches instead of AC executive class. This arrangement will be in place for at least another week. This arrangement has been necessitated as the AC chair car coaches of Shatabdi express have been sent for overhauling following Wednesday's accident in which a truck toppled from an overpass just as the train was passing below. Though there was no collision, the truck scrapped the passing train and damaged a few coaches. Sources in the Railways said the train was moving at a speed of 80 km per hour and risked derailment had the engine collided with the vehicle directly. While each Shatabdi AC chair car coach can accommodate 67 passengers, the conventional two-tier AC coach will carry 46 passengers and the three tier coach 64 passengers. The original Shatabdi coaches have freezers and hot cases to serve fresh food. But the conventional coaches do not have the facilities and the Railways have made alternative arrangements, the sources added. Meanwhile, traffic on the Bangalore-Mysore section has been restored to normalcy and all trains are running as per schedule. However, on Friday the Mysore-Bangalore push-pull returned from Mandya following a breakdown of the locomotive of a goods train on the single-line track.
