Talks with naxals not to marginalise police: YSR

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said that the Government had initiated talks with naxalite leaders not with an intention to marginalise the police.

If the extremists had regrouped taking advantage of the talks, the Government had given them enough leeway to take firm steps against their violent activities legally, he said at the silver jubilee celebrations of Andhra Pradesh Police Officers Association, here on Saturday.

Dr. Reddy appreciated the police for its effective functioning in checking village feuds and communalism. He said that the Government had abolished the `orderly' system in the department to enhance the morale of the personnel.

Dr. Reddy was in favour of amendments to service rules so that constables who served for 15 to 20 years got promotions.

The police manual would be amended to provide special scale increments to the force, the Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, said.
