HYDERABAD: The Minister for School Education, N. Rajyalaxmi, has come out with a three-pronged strategy to ensure enrolment of all children above five years in schools during the "enrolment week" from June 6 to 11 in the State. Giving details of the strategy at a review meeting with officials of the District Primary Education Programme (DPEP) and the School Education Department here on Saturday, Mrs. Rajyalaxmi said each school would be treated as a unit and children over five years enrolled in schools. Those who had discontinued studies and those out of school would be identified and persuaded to rejoin.
Low-literacy districts
She expressed concern that eight out of the 150 low-literacy districts in the country were in Andhra Pradesh. They were Mahabubnagar, Vizianagaram, Medak, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Kurnool and Srikakulam. She said there was variation in the figures furnished by the Centre on the number of illiterates and the ones available with the State. The Minister said from this academic year, teaching would be done through Edusat programme. A State-level committee was constituted to oversee the Edusat programmes. Computer education would be imparted in 1,000 Government schools. Teachers would be trained at the Marri Chenna Reddy Institute of Human Resources Development. Referring to the problems of the teachers, she said the draft ordinance pertaining to the common service rules for the teachers was approved. The transfers and promotions of the teachers would start shortly. Three regional education awareness programmes would be organised in Warangal (May 24), Visakhapatnam (May 27) and Vijayawada (May 28). She warned of tough action against English medium schools if the managements harassed students who spoke in Telugu. She made it clear that teaching in Telugu medium was compulsory till SSC. The Principal Secretary (school education), P. Krishnaiah, School Education Director, K. Ramakrishna Rao, and DPEP State Project Director, Chandramouli, spoke.
