Krishnan Nair on WHO's cancer control panel

Thiruvananthapuram: Eminent oncologist M. Krishnan Nair has been appointed member of the World Health Organisation's Cancer Control Advisory Committee.

According to information received here, Dr. Nair, who is founder-director of the Regional Cancer Centre here, is the only nominee from India on the committee that comprises experts in international public health and cancer control from 14 countries. His appointment will be for a term of two years.

Talking about his new assignment, Dr. Nair said the aim of the WHO Cancer Control Strategy was to strengthen and accelerate the translation of cancer control knowledge into public health action.

The focus would be to ensure the reduction of cancer cases and improve quality of life of patients and their families. — UNI

Indian stabbed to

death in Doha

Dubai: An Indian national, working as a salesman in a supermarket in Doha, was stabbed to death by unidentified persons allegedly after a row over cigarettes. Mohammed Younus, 34, belonging to Poyiloor in Kannur, Kerala, was killed on Thursday, while his colleague, Abdul Kalam, also from the State, sustained injuries and is in hospital.

The incident occurred at around 2 a.m. as Younus and Abdul Kalam were preparing to close the shop. The accused came to the shop to buy some items and entered into a quarrel with the two salesmen, the Peninsula Daily reported.

The quarrel apparently began when the suspects asked for cigarettes on credit, which the salesmen refused, the daily reported. It added that the suspects, said to be three in number and speaking Arabic, fled from the spot.

Younus had been working at the shop for more than 15 years. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, who are currently in Kerala. — PTI

Plus Two SAY examination

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The higher secondary (HS) Save-A-Year (SAY) examination will be held at 211 examination centres across the State from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 16.

A release here on Friday said students would have the same register number and hall ticket issued for the HS examinations held in March this year. — Staff Reporter

RPF registers 380 cases

PALAKKAD: The Railway Protection Force of Palakkad Railway Division has registered 380 cases against passengers in the last three days. An amount of Rs. 48,686 was realised as fine from them through the Railway Court. — Staff Reporter

KASARAGOD: The Economic Census under the aegis of the Department of Economics and Statistics will get under way in the district in the first week of June, according to an official press note.

PATHANAMTHITTA: The newly installed Catholicos and Major Archbishop of the Malankara Catholic Church, Moran Mor Cyril Mar Baselius, was given a rousing reception in his home village of Ullannur near Pandalam this afternoon.

The reception was arranged at the Ullannur St Mary's Catholic Church at Ullannur. P. J. Kurien, MP, inaugurated the meeting.

Anniversary

PATHANATHITTA: The idol installation anniversary at Lord Ayyappa Temple in Sabarimala was celebrated with religious fervour on Saturday. The Tantri, Kantaru Mohanaru, assisted by the Melsanthi, V. Muraleedharan Namboodiri, led `athirudra yajnam' on the temple premises.

Doctors' strike

KOLLAM: Government doctors will strike work for 24 hours from 8 a.m. on Monday. The strike is being called under the banner of the Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA).

At a press conference here on Saturday, the district president of the KGMOA, Thomas Philip, and the secretary, P. Babuchandran, said that the decision for the strike was taken as other methods to make the Government recognise its demands had failed. — Staff Reporter
