UDUPI: The Bagepalli MLA, G.V. Sriram Reddy, said on Saturday that certain forces have taken recourse to communalism to further their political aims. He was speaking at a conference on harmony organised by the Sauharda Okkoota, here. Mr. Reddy said that people did not want any damage to the secular fabric of the country. It is wrong on the part of political parties to exploit differences in religion, caste and language. Political parties have failed to address the basic problems of the people. They should be secular by conviction and not by consideration, he said. Mr. Reddy said certain forces are not interested in territorial nationalism because they will then have to treat all civilisations as equals. Hence they were concentrating on cultural nationalism. He said that there was widespread feeling in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts that law and order machinery has come to a standstill. This is because people were feeling that the district administration is partial to a particular community. Mr. Reddy said the statement of the President of Bharatiya Janata Party, L.K. Advani, that the United Progressive Alliance should be wary of the Left, was misleading. Reactionary forces were concentrating on issues such as Datta Peetha, Idgah Maidan, Kanaka Gopura and Tiranga Yatra. These ploys are meant to divert the attention of the people from the real issues. Now these forces are focussing on cow slaughter issue, Mr. Reddy added.
