MANGALORE: All three major parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) are gearing up for the coming zilla panchayat and taluk panchayat elections after the Government released the reservation chart. While the BJP and the Congress have sounded their grassroots-level units to mobilise support. The Janata Dal (S) is banking on its youth wing. The spokesperson of the BJP district unit, Monappa Bhandari, said the party is in an upbeat mood in the district, particularly after it swept the elections to Lok Sabha and the State Assembly in 2004. With party MLAs in place in Buntwal, Mangalore, Vittla, Sullia and Puttur, the BJP is looking for a comeback in the zilla panchayat after being drubbed at the hands of the Congress 30 to 1 in the last elections in 2000. The sole representative of the party in the Dakshina Kannada was Padmanabha Kottari, who was later elected to the Assembly from Vittla. Since then, the BJP has no representation in the zilla panchayat. The Congress lost no time in launching itself into the election gear. With its party base intact since the last elections to the local bodies, it might not have to do much groundwork as it has all the sitting members as stalwarts in their respective areas, says the District Congress Committee president, Blasius M D'Souza. The Congress could not have asked for a better mandate than the last elections where it secured 30 out of 31 seats. But Mr. D'Souza and senior party leaders said that the inclusion of four new zilla panchayat constituencies in the recent re-organisation could mean that the Congress workers might have to go that extra mile to retain and improve the mandate it enjoyed for the last five years.
