MADURAI: Trade and Industrial bodies have hailed the approval accorded to the Sethusamudram project by the Central Government. In a release issued on Friday, the chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry (Southern Region), Madurai Zone, T. Johnson, said the project would give impetus to the industrial growth of southern districts and help generate employment opportunities. It would also boost marine related industrial activities and the Tuticorin harbour could attract more international traffic acting as an alternative port to Colombo and Singapore, the confederation added. In another release, the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has said the project would help in developing the minor ports in Colachel, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Thondi and improve the economic status of backward coastal districts. Apart from easing the congestion in major ports, it would enhance foreign exchange earnings, the Chamber pointed out. Recalling the efforts taken by the Chamber, including organising agitations and conducting seminars in favour of the project, its president S. Rethinavelu has expressed happiness over the clearance of the project. He thanked the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, his cabinet colleagues, and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, for their efforts in getting the approval for the project.
