Commodity prices

Following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Saturday. Groundnut oil - 50, palmolein oil - 39.25, sunflower oil - 47.50, tamarind (flower variety) - 20 to 28, tamarind (karipuli variety) - 42 to 46, chillies (new) - 13 to 14, rice (2716) - 13, rice (superfine) - 15, rice (sona masoori) - 17 to 19, rice (samba masoori) - 15 to 17, black gram - 22 to 24, red gram - 22.80 to 27.30.

BSNL customer meets

The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has postponed the customer meets from May 23 to May 24. The meetings will be held at the office of the general manager in Chuttugunta, offices of the divisional telecom engineers at Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Nuzvid, Vuyyuru, Challapalli, Kaikaluru, Nandigama and Tiruvuru and at the office of the sub-divisional engineer at Gannavaram at 11 a.m. The BSNL customers can lodge their complaints with the officials at the meetings.

Child labourers rescued

The officials of the Labour Department have rescued 26 children engaged in work at several workshops in Autonagar and enrolled them into the schools being run under the National Child Labour Project. The officials ordered the employers to pay minimum wages to the children for their work period in the form of national savings certificates.

Art of living classes

The Vyakti Vikasa Kendra will conduct classes in art of living and seminars on youth empowerment at Baskin Robin hall near M&M showroom on Bandar Road from May 24. Details can be had on phone numbers 98490-15616 and 94403-21528.

Free yoga camp

The Suraksha Health Village will conduct a weeklong free yoga camp at Funtimes Club in RTC Colony from May 23. Classes will be held in yoga, pranayama and meditation. Details can be had on phone number 0866-2488188.

Tributes to Rajiv Gandhi

The members of the Vijayawada City Congress Committee, on Saturday, observed the 14th death anniversary of the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, at the Andhra Ratna Bhavan here. The city unit general secretary, K. Gangadhara Rao, the secretary, Meer Hussain, and other leaders offered floral tributes to the former Prime Minister.
