BANGALORE: The former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (S) President, H.D. Deve Gowda, has condemned the attack on officials of the Revenue Department by the land mafia at Arehalli in the Uttarahalli Assembly constituency in the city on Friday and demanded suspension of the policemen who failed to give protection to the Revenue officials. Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Mr. Deve Gowda said a gang assaulted the officials of the Revenue Department with weapons when the latter went to demolish illegally constructed buildings at Arehalli in Uttarahalli constituency. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, who holds the Home portfolio, should take action against the culprits who were responsible for the attack. The police officials who failed to discharge their duty and protect the officials should be suspended, he said.
BDA criticised
He criticised the functioning of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and its Commissioner, Vidyashankar. Instead of allotting sites to middle class and poor families, the BDA has opened a counter to return the money collected from the applicants. Many real estate agents, including a France based firm, have acquired over 3,500 acres in the greenbelt region of the city. He would write to the Chief Minister to direct the BDA to recover the land allotted to the realtors. The Janata Dal (S) supremo suggested to the Government to set up a special squad to recover encroached lands in the city.
