BANGALORE: In a suspected act of sabotage, nearly 170 huts were reduced to ashes in a fire that broke out twice, on Friday night and Saturday morning, in 4th Stage, Peenya. It is suspected that someone set the huts on fire to evict the people who had built small dwellings on the land belonging to the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB). Hundreds of people, who were rendered homeless, also lost their household articles, grocery and clothes in the fire. Most of the affected families are from Yadagir taluk in Gulbarga district. They had been living there for nearly 20 years. They are all casual labourers in factories in the Peenya Industrial estate, the police said. The Deputy Director (Fire Services), B.G. Chengappa, said they received information around 8.30 p.m. on Friday that huts at 4th Stage, Peenya, had caught fire. Six fire tenders rushed to the spot and put out the fire after a three-hour struggle. Nearly 35 of the 172 huts were gutted. Around 3 a.m. on Saturday, fire broke out in the area for the second time destroying almost all the huts. Though five fire tenders rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire, nothing could be salvaged, Mr. Chengappa said. While the cause of fire is not known, sources in the city police and Fire Services told The Hindu that they suspected some foul play. The manner in which fire broke out twice destroying all the dwellings suggests that it could be an attempt to evict the residents, the sources said. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), Syed Ulfath Hussain, said the Rajagopalanagar police have registered a case and are probing the cause of the fire. "It appears to be a case of mischief," he said. The Deputy Commissioner, Bangalore Urban District, M.A. Sadiq, and the Kanakapura MP, Tejaswini Sriramesh, visited the area. Mr. Sadiq announced a compensation of Rs. 8,000 to each of the affected families.
