Heroin seized from air passenger

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Air Intelligence Unit of Air Customs at the international airport here seized 187.3 gm of high-quality heroin, estimated at Rs.18.73 lakhs in the international market, from a Male-bound passenger on Friday.

Based on a tip-off, Intelligence personnel intercepted Suraj Santha Surendran, who was waiting to board Indian Airlines flight IC 963, scheduled to leave for Male at 11 a.m. on Thursday. An examination of the passenger and his bag did not yield anything.

However, when questioned, he confessed to having swallowed 40 packets of heroin, Customs said.

An X-ray scan of Surendran's abdomen revealed capsule-like objects inside. Forty polythene packets of heroin, stuck with adhesive tape, were recovered from the excreta of the accused at the Medical College Hospital here through a process that lasted more than 48 hours.

The accused is a native of Kalpada in Kallayam, near here.

The seizure was made by a team led by the Deputy Commissioners John Jacob and Sophia M. Joy, under the supervision of the Commissioner, R.K. Jain.

Man electrocuted

One person was electrocuted on Saturday evening when he was operating a motor pump used for drawing water from the well. He has been identified as Habib, 55, of Vizhinjam. The body has been kept in the mortuary of the Medical College Hospital.

Dead

Nicholas, 51, fisherman from Pulluvila, who was injured after two fishing boats collided with each other, died at the Medical College Hospital on Saturday evening.

The body has been kept in the hospital mortuary.
