VIT courses get international recognition

Staff Reporter

7 undergraduate, 16 postgraduate courses have been recognised

CHENNAI: : The Vellore Institute of Technology has received international accreditation from the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE), United Kingdom.

Seven undergraduate and 16 postgraduate courses the VIT offer have been recognised as being equivalent to B.Engg (Hons) and M.Sc degrees of the U.K. universities, G Viswanathan, Chancellor, VIT, told presspersons here on Saturday.

The accreditation was for the mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer science and engineering, computer applications and information technology courses, and would be applicable till 2009. Students enrolled since 2001 were eligible for the IEE membership and chartered engineer status. This would put VIT students on a par with those in the United States, the U.K. and Australian universities.

"This will offer equal opportunities for our students in international recruitments. Transfer of credits is possible, and our training programmes are now under global scrutiny. Our teachers are also eligible for recognition as international trainers and examiners," he said. International students could also utilise VIT training.

The curriculum was overhauled, over 18 months, to meet the IEE requirements.

"This will better our placement record of 97 per cent in Indian and international firms. We are collaborating with institutions in Australia, Canada, France, Germany and the U.K. academic and industrial training. Memoranda of Understanding have also been signed with the Governments of Rwanda, Uganda and Bhutan for student enrolment and faculty training," Mr Viswanathan said.
