NEW DELHI: "Cigarette smoking is a major cause of preventable deaths across the world and those who smoke die about 10 years earlier than those who don't,'' said the Health Care Foundation of India (HCFI) president and a noted cardiologist, K.K. Aggarwal, at the opening ceremony of an anti-tobacco camp at K L Chopra Body Mind Institute here on Friday. Pointing out the evils of tobacco consumption, he said smoking adversely impacts pregnant women and their unborn children. Smoking mothers have a greater risk of miscarriage and stillbirths. Even passive smokers stand an increased risk of developing lung, throat and mouth cancer, he added. The fortnight-long free counselling camp aims at educating the masses on the ill effects of tobacco use and related products. It has been jointly organised by the HCFI, Delhi Medical Association, New Delhi Municipal Council and the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests as part of their anti-smoking drive in the run-up to the "World No-Tobacco Day'' on May 31.
