NEW DELHI: Recognising the threat that small pox virus, which was declared eradicated from the world in 1980, could be ``reintroduced'', the World Health Organisation has decided to establish a reserve of the vaccine against the highly infectious disease which kills about a quarter of those affected. In the reserve plan, WHO would build its strategic stockpile of small pox vaccine in Geneva while countries were invited to donate and maintain additional stocks pledged to WHO which would be despatched where they are most needed in the event of an emergency. The reserve is progressing with 2.5 million doses in Geneva and an additional 31 million doses donated by countries, including 20 million from the US and five million from France. The vaccines would be used in the event of a small pox emergency, particularly for those countries that don't have have the resources to create their own stockpile, information available at the WHO website said. -PTI
