police brutality

NEW DELHI: A city court has directed the Delhi Police to inquire into the incident in which one of its constable was allegedly beaten up by his colleagues after he refused to withdraw his complaint of a theft at his house.

The Metropolitan Magistrate, Amit Kumar, ordered Station House Officer (SHO) of Nand Nagri in East Delhi to inquire the alleged beating and manhandling of constable Mansha Ram by a cop at Harsh Vihar Police post and file the report on Monday.

Five arrested

NEW DELHI: With the arrest of five young men, North-West Delhi police claim to have busted a gang of car stereo thieves and recovered at least five stereos from them. According to the police, on Saturday morning they received a call about a car stereo theft at Keshavpuram. On reaching the spot, the police team was told about the suspicious movement of some youths in a car.

Soon the police intercepted the car after a brief chase on Ring Road. On search, five car stereos were recovered from the car. All the five youths - Vipin Rathore (17) of Arya Nagar, Gagan Sharma (16) of Kanhaiya Nagar, Sachin Kansal (17) of Tri Nagar and Amit (17) also of Tri Nagar - were arrested. The car used in the crime was also seized by the police.

Gas cylinders seized

NEW DELHI: The North-East District police claim to have busted an alleged racket in pilferage of cooking gas with the arrest of four persons in the JMI Industrial area near Ambedkar Camp over the weekend.

Acting on a tip-off, a special police team raided the place and caught three persons, Rajinder, Ajit and Karan, while they were refilling empty cylinders. At their instance, another accused, Rohtash, was also arrested.

During the raid, the police team also recovered twelve underweight gas cylinders, iron pipe, weighing scale, three cycles used to carry cylinders and two broken plastic seals of Indane gas from their possession.

According to the police, the accused in connivance with the godown in-charge of Supreme Enterprises at Vivek Vihar took consignment of filled gas cylinders without any delivery receipt or challan and then used to pilfer the cooking gas.

19 eve-teasers held

NEW DELHI: In its ongoing drive against eve-teasers and unscrupulous elements, the West Delhi police on Saturday arrested 19 eve-teasers and 18 persons for drinking in public places. The drive is being carried out in buses, markets and other crowded places by police personnel in plain clothes. Beat constables have also been asked to step up vigil.

Schools' project

NEW DELHI: With school children being one of the most vulnerable sections in the event of a disaster like an earthquake or a fire, Delhi schools are getting ready to face any such eventuality by preparing their own `Disaster Management Plans.'

In a process that was started as part of a UNDP-funded project in September 2003, around 500 schools in the national Capital have already prepared disaster management plans.

``We have covered Government as well as private schools as part of this programme to prepare them for emergency situations,'' said Sanjay Kumar Jha, State Project Officer for the GOI-UNDP Disaster Management Risk Programme.
