English names on hoardings defaced

Special Correspondent

200 persons taken into custody

CHENNAI: Members of the Tamil Protection Movement, led by S. Ramadoss and Thol. Tirumavalavan, here on Monday took part in an agitation to deface English names on hoardings and display boards of commercial establishments.

Carried out as part of the "third language stir," the members blackened some hoardings put up near the Madras Medical College. The police took into custody about 200 persons and released them in the evening. Among the leaders picked up by the police were P. Nedumaran, G.K. Mani, and N. Sethuraman.

Dr. Ramadoss urged the State Government to implement in "letter and spirit" its orders issued in 1983, 1984 and 1990, directing the commercial establishments to have their name boards in Tamil. Though 50 years went by since the State Government adopted Tamil as official language, several government orders were still issued in English.

Stir to continue

He also asked the administration to appoint adequate number of persons for teaching the subject of `Scientific Tamil' in schools. The agitation had been to ensure Tamil was given the place of pride. This would go on till the goal was achieved.
