Kidnapped woman rescued

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: A woman from Nungambakkam, who was kidnapped on Saturday, was rescued in Salem on Sunday.

Police said Subramaniam (45) a businessman from Salem, came to the city with his wife Sangeetha (28) to visit a hospital. While the couple were searching for a lodge in Nungambakkam, a gang kidnapped them. Mr. Subramaniam was pushed out of the kidnappers' vehicle by the gang.

Later in the day, they demanded money from Subramaniam to release his wife. As he was unable to mobilise money immediately, he approached the Nungambakkam police.

A special party was formed and a trap was laid for the kidnappers. Mr. Subramaniam asked the gang members to collect the money from him at Egmore. When one of the gang members arrived to collect the ransom, he was arrested. The other gang members were arrested later and the woman rescued.

Police identified the arrested as Sundaram, Ramani, Shankar and the van driver Venugopal. Two others, Anandan and Jeyaseelan managed to escape.
