Madiga horata samiti urges Govt. to provide segmented quota

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: Members of the Madiga Meesalati Horata Samiti on Monday staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here to pressure the Union and State Governments to initiate steps to provide quotas for the various groups eligible for reservation.

The samiti has demanded that the Union Government amend Article 16 (A) of the Constitution providing for the States to specify quotas for communities eligible for reservation.

It has also urged the State Government to appoint a Chairman to the one-man commission and complete the process of conducting a survey of reserved categories and extend reservation benefits based on the size of the community. They also wanted reservation to be extended to the private sector.

Jayaram Madiga, senior vice-president of the State Committee, told presspersons here on Monday that the Madiga community has been deprived of reservation benefits.

He said the samiti has submitted memoranda to several political leaders, including the President of the All-India Congress Committee, Sonia Gandhi, urging her to raise the issue in Parliament and ensure that the Constitution is amended.

Mr. Madiga said that a large number of Madigas from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, and Maharashtra will attend a conference at Hyderabad on June 11 to mark the culmination of the padayatra undertaken by him to press for the amendment to the Constitution. Jagannath, district unit President, was present.
