HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam party has ridiculed the way the Congress Government obtained a "good conduct certificate" from the All- India Congress Committee, for its one-year rule that was marked by "failures." Addressing a press conference here on Monday, the TDP leaders -- T. Devender Goud, S. Maruthi and V. Narender Reddy -- said the single most important achievement was "deceiving people" with promises and resorting to "Rajiv bhajan" to please the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi. Instead of critically analysing the failures and unkept promises like free power to the agriculture sector, the AICC merely expressed satisfaction. The three leaders demanded that irrigation projects listed in Category I for calling tenders be taken up first in the ongoing public debate. They said the Government was deliberately delaying debate on the controversial projects involving large-scale irregularities and corruption, for the fear of getting exposed.
"Is it a boundary wall being surreptitiously built by India on Indo- Pak border to be kept a secret?" Mr. Goud asked on the open debate.
`Tender process flawed'
They said their apprehensions over the tender process, especially Engineering, Procurement and Construction method were confirmed by independent experts who attended a meeting organised by the Institution of Engineers recently. The Government's claim that it had raised the budget allocation for irrigation had become meaningless as a major part remained unspent.
