No ordinary folks these

R. Ravikanth Reddy

The medical top ranker hails from an agricultural labour family while the 11th ranker in engineering is a first generation learner.

HYDERABAD: A bus conductor, a head constable, a constable, an agricultural labour and a small farmer -- different people but mere cogs in the wheel of daily life from different parts of the State. On Monday, they shared a common joy, thanks to their wards' stupendous achievements in the mother of all examinations, the EAMCET.

The children emerged as toppers in the examination leaving the parents with humble, in some cases impoverished and illiterate background, with boundless joy. Standing out among them is Ch. Naveen, a student of Narayana Coaching Academy in Dilsukhnagar, who got the 11th rank in the engineering stream. He is a first generation learner while his parents are agricultural labourers. A native of Rampur village in Huzurabad mandal of Karimnagar district, Naveen's father owns two acres of land, which is the only means of their income.

"My parents understand the value of education and they never hesitated to spend money on me," says the lad who has been a topper since his childhood and studied in Telugu medium. He scored 519 marks in SSC and 954 marks in Intermediate and wants to study at any of the IITs and later pursue research in physics. Dedicating the achievement to his mother, he sounds confidence personified stating that he would get into IIT this year.

The toppers in both engineering and medical streams -- from Sri Chaitanya Educational Institutions -- too share a similar background. Naresh Reddy, the engineering topper, hails from Kadiri in Anantapur though he studied in the city. His father, Gopal Reddy, is a police constable in Tappachabutra police station in the city. "The achievement has made me proud," he told The Hindu hugging his son.

The medical top ranker, Rajendra Prasad comes from an agricultural family in Rebenna village of East Godavari district. He plans to study at AIIMS and sounds confident of getting through.

The fourth ranker in engineering, Sudheer Kumar Reddy, also hails from an agricultural family in Panyam in Kurnool district. The father of V. Satyanarayana, the 31st ranker in engineering, is a bus conductor in Kurnool depot of APSRTC. "It is one of the best days of my life," said Chandrasekhar, his father, trying to control his emotions. His elder son got 18th rank last year and is at JNTU, Hyderabad.

Another success story is of Mukheem, the 58th ranker in the medicine stream. His father, M.A. Khayoom, is head constable in Mahabubabad police station. "It's a gift to my father," says Mukheem. All these candidates attribute their success not only to their parents but the innovative teaching methods. "Without our teachers' constant support this would not have been possible," they announce unanimously.
