Thousands witness `Rathothsavam'

TIRUPATI: `Rathothsavam' (Car festival) was organised as part of the ongoing Govindarajaswamy Brahmotsavam here on Monday. The flower-bedecked wooden `theru,' which moved out of point zero by 6.20 a.m., was cheerfully dragged by devotees through the four streets encircling the temple. Thousands of devotees thronged the vicinity.`Snapana Tirumanjanam' was performed in the afternoon when the deity of the Lord was given a celestial bath. - Staff Reporter

Deer horns seized

KHAMMAM: Forest officials seized 60 deer horns weighing 34 kg from a scrap shop in Bhadrachalam on Monday, according to the Deputy Range Officer, Hariprasad. He said the horns were collected from local sources over a period of six to seven months. The horns were of different sizes and some were cut into pieces. Shop owner was in Kakinada when the raid was conducted. - Staff Reporter

Aid scheme for voluntary bodies

HYDERABAD: Applications for extending financial assistance to voluntary organisations/societies engaged in development and maintenance of national memorials for 2005 maybe submitted to the Director, Department of Culture, Kala Bhavan, by December 3. Proforma applications can be obtained from the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture, New Delhi, or the Director. A. Srikanth, Director, said in a press release that the assistance scheme was intended to create awareness about eminent national personalities who contributed to and played a signal role in the country's history. The applications should be accompanied by the recommendations of the district Magistrate concerned or the Director of Culture. - Staff Reporter

Two naxalites arrested in extortion case

ELURU: The police on Monday arrested two naxalites belonging to the Ramachandran group of the CPI-ML (Janashakti) for their alleged involvement in a case of extortion reported at Darbhagudem in Jeelugumilli mandal. According to the Jangareddy DSP, Chaganti Rama Rao, a three member-gang of naxalites, comprising Gaddala Venkateswara Rao, S. Subhakar and Yesu, collected Rs.10,000 in cash from a cotton commission agent, Koneti Hanumantha Rao, at Darbhagudem at gun point recently.

While Venkateswara Rao is still at large, the other two were arrested at Kondagudem in Kamavarapukota mandal. Meanwhile, the police arrested four sympathisers of the Ramachandran group--S. Gangaraju, R. Gangulu, T. Nageswara Rao and Mani--for allegedly assisting the Kranti dalam in burning an APSRTC bus at Doramamidi in March. - Staff Reporter

University employees' meet on May 27

VIJAYAWADA: The ninth national conference of All-India University Employees' Confederation will be held at NTR University of Health Sciences here on May 27 at 11 a.m. It is being hosted by the NTR UHS Employees' Association and ANU Employees & Workers' Union.

On May 28, there will be a seminar on `Future of universities in the context of globalisation, liberalisation and privatisation' at Siddhartha Medical College Auditorium at 10 a.m. - Staff Reporter

Collector takes charge

NELLORE: M. Ravichandra, a senior IAS officer, assumed charge as Collector and District Magistrate, Nellore, on Monday afternoon. Till recently he was Joint Collector, Ranga Reddy district and earlier served in Chittoor district. He hails from an agriculture family in Srikakulam district. The new Collector said he would give top priority to irrigation works. The grievances day mechanism, mainly meant to receive representations from different sections of people, would be further strengthened, he said. - Staff Reporter

Plea for justice

NELLORE: Members of the District Committee against Atrocities on Women have urged the administration to render justice to a 5-year old girl, who was allegedly molested by one Syed Anwar in Kasumur village of Venkatachalasatram mandal. The members who visited the village on Monday said though the incident had occurred on May 16, it was not reported to the police as the relatives of the accused were reportedly trying for comprise with the victim's family. However, the girl's mother reported the matter to the police. The members sought justice and compensation to the girl. - Staff Reporter

Pirated CDs seized

NELLORE: In a surprise raid conducted on a video shop in Nellore town, on Sunday night, the police seized about 200 pirated CDs and pornographic films. Two persons were taken into custody in this connection and further investigation is on. - Staff Reporter

Property destroyed

in fire

NELLORE: Property worth more than Rs. 22,000 was lost in two separate fire mishaps in Nellore district on Monday. While a fire, said to be due to careless smoking, destroyed eucalyptus oil plantations at Donthali village on Podalakur road, a thatched house was destroyed at Kotamitta of Nellore town.

Fire tenders from the town rushed to the spot and controlled the fire. - Staff Reporter
