Staff Reporter

  • The accused used to send messages to `victims'

  • Caught trying to escape with the mobile

Cell bounty: Swapna at a press meet with the cell phones at Begumpet police station on Monday.

HYDERABAD: The Begumpet police rounded up a junior artiste in films, Swapna, 18, on Monday on charge of stealing mobiles from eight persons after befriending them with sweet talk.

On Monday, a car decor shop owner approached the police saying he had been receiving "invitations" on his mobile from a girl to meet her at a hotel.

A police party was sent with the man. He met the girl at Begumpet and invited her into his car.

After chatting with him for a few minutes, the girl picked up his mobile, jumped out of the car and tried to flee only to be caught by police waiting outside.

During interrogation, she said her father deserted her mother who works as home guard in the Police Department.

"As mother's income was not enough to make both ends meet, I started acting in films.

But, when there are no shootings we starve. Hence, I resorted to this," the North Zone DCP, Kumar Vishwajeet, quoted the girl as saying at a press meet on Monday.

    Fluent in English

Swapna studied up to Intermediate. But, she was fluent in English and dressed like a model. In the first case, she rang up a mobile number at random and then selected numbers from those stored in the stolen mobile.

"All the eight mobiles she had lifted are higher end models," the Begumpet ACP, B. Reddenna, explained.

Swapna was earlier arrested allegedly for duping owners of video libraries.
