This Day That Age
How many of the eight million saffron-clad men who roam the countryside are real sadhus? According to Prime Minister Nehru, not all of them are bona fide sadhus. "Many of them take to this sort of easy life because they can get food and shelter without doing any work. This is not good at all." Mr. Nehru made this observation while addressing a conference of Congress women organisations in New Delhi on May 23. He was recalling his visit to Hardwar, where he had seen a very large number of sadhus.
