TIRUNELVELI: After intensive search for four years, the city police here have arrested a youth, who was allegedly involved in several burglaries in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tiruchi districts and recovered 81 sovereigns of gold ornaments worth about Rs.4 lakhs from him. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli Range, K. Gopalakrishnan, D. Paul alias Durai alias Arul (30) of Paambanvilai in Kanyakumari district, against whom as many as 44 warrants were pending, was arrested by a special team, led by the sub-inspector of police (crime), A. Gurusamy. "He is involved in a series of burglaries in Palayamkottai, Maharaja Nagar, Vannarpettai, Tirunelveli Town, Perumalpuram. He gave a slip to the police after he was admitted to the Nagercoil Government Hospital four years ago. Since he changed his name and area of operation, the police were clueless. However, a special team was formed, which successfully arrested him after following him for about a month," he said.
Grocer or chain-snatcher
The Tirunelveli police also unravelled the mystery behind the sudden rise in the chain-snatching incidents in the twin towns of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai when they arrested a grocer, R. Narayanan (25) of Munneerpallam near here. "Ater snatching chain from women walking alone, he used to buy commodities for his shop and returned to his village without any problem. Since the victims could neither identify him nor recall the registration number of his two-wheeler, the police was clueless. Eventually, his identification was established based on the information provided by one of the victims, which led to his arrest. We have recovered 27 sovereigns of gold ornaments from him and got information about two othersinvolved in chain snatching incidents and they will be arrested anytime now." . Mr. Gopalakrishnan said the City Police had deployed 14 patrol teams with the Tirunelveli police Commissionerate apart from the routine patrols of the Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors. Moreover, 18-armed policemen in plainclothes, were going around in two-wheelers. The DIG appealed to the public to inform the police in case of their vacation tour to far off places so that `shadows' could be deputed in those spots. After handing over the recovered valuables to the owners, he thanked the informers, particularly auto drivers and two-wheeler mechanics.
