NCRD pleased with UGD scheme implementation

Staff Reporter

Seventy five per cent of work over, says NRCD consultant NRCD released Rs.10.60 crores so far since the Corporation mobilised from the public only that much

TIRUNELVELI: Expressing satisfaction over the manner in which the underground drainage scheme is being implemented in the Tirunelveli Corporation, the consultant, National River Conservation Department, New Delhi, K. B. Tandon, on Tuesday said the project would be completed by December 2005.

Addressing a review meeting held at the Corporation on Tuesday, Mr. Tandon said the NCRD, with the prime objective of conserving rivers in the country, was financially assisting to the tune of Rs.500 crores for the implementation of underground drainage schemes at Tirunelveli, Tiruchi, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Madurai, Kumbakonam and Karur. While Metro Water, Chennai was executing the project at Madurai and Kumbakonam, the work had been entrusted to Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD Board) in other municipalities and corporations.

"With the Union Government, which agreed in principle to release Rs.26 crores as its contribution for the Tirunelveli UGD scheme, the NRCD has released Rs.10.60 crores so far, since the Corporation has mobilised from the public only this much. We are ready to release the rest as and when the Corporation collects and pays the contribution from public to the TWAD Board," Mr. Tandon said.

Despite the presence of hard rock and abundant ground water in most of the areas, the UGD work was being implemented "rapidly but promptly, as they had completed 75 per cent of the work in the past two years."

8,100 connections given

The Commissioner, D. Chandrasekaran, said house connections had been given to 8,100 beneficiaries so far as they had paid their contribution and 12,000 more connections were to be given, as they were yet to give their payment. He appealed to the beneficiaries to pay their share at the earliest for successful completion of the programme.

The Executive Engineer, Union Ministry of Environment and Forest, Chandrasekar, Superintending Engineer, TWAD Board, B. Daniel, the Executive Engineer, TWAD Board, E. Krishnan, and corporation officials participated in the meeting.
