Pondicherry
STAFF REPORTERPONDICHERRY: STAFF REPORTERPONDICHERRY: Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, has said that the people friendly-government provided by his government after assuming office in 2001 had generated balanced and all round development. The experiment would continue unabated, he said while recalling the progress made by his government over the last four years. Recalling the achievements of the government headed by him the Chief Minister said in a release on Monday that he was keen that all the four regions of Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam of the Union Territory had made balanced progress. The principles dearest to Kamarajar, the sustained guidance of the chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance and the president of all India Congress Committee Sonia Gandhi and the counselling extended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had been chiefly responsible for successful implementation of several welfare measures benefiting the downtrodden and the weaker sections in the Union Territory. Relief and rehabilitation works in the tsunami-hit villages were so effective that the steps taken by the government had earned encomiums from the Centre.
Special Economic Zone
Although it was initially feared that as much as Rs 100 crores would be lost in the wake of implementation of uniform sales tax, the practical steps taken by the Administration to have a Special Economic Zone and also a Free (duty free) port had come in handy and necessary preliminary works were initiated with the nod of the Centre for these two vital projects. Mr. Rangasamy said that the two schemes would not only enhance the economic growth of Pondicherry but would also generate jobs for the educated youth. The Planning Commission was so pleased with the performance of the Administration in utilising the plan funds that it had conceded a representation for sanction of Rs 810 crores for the current financial year. Farmers, who suffered the impact of the tsunami in their fertile land, would be paid a compensation of Rs 60,000 for a hectare of land lost and farm labourers would be given an assistance of Rs 5,000.
